The Environmental Crisis, of which climate change is a part, makes a radical change urgent, inevitable and essential not only in the energy matrix of our society, but also in the modes of production and consumption. The current emphasis on decarbonisation and on a particular model of renewables (that of Industrial Renewable Electricity) not only does not adapt to the complexity of the sustainability problems that afflict our society, but is failing miserably in aspects such as the environmental and social worsening of extractivism in the Global South, the technical unfeasibility of large wind turbines, the decrease and zero prices of electricity, or the failure of the massive electrification plan for the use of energy, to give just a few examples.
In this talk we will critically analyse why we have reached the current situation, what are the sustainability challenges of our society, both environmental and material, and why the proposed model does not work. Finally, I will discuss which option we should really choose.
